Obedience is the measuring rod by which a dog is judged as a human companion; it is important that your dog have good manners in public and in private. Obedience training not only teaches the dog what behavior is expected of him, it also teaches the owner how to be consistent in indicating to the dog the difference between good and bad behavior. Obedience and Agility judging offer an opportunity for the dog to be judged, not against another dog, but against a perfect score. Dogs receive and lose points based solely on the way they respond to commands from the handler. This is a dog sport that welcomes pure bred as well as mixed breed dogs.

Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a course that has been designed by the Rally judge. The judge tells the handler to begin and the dog and handler proceed at their own pace through a course of designated stations (10 - 20 depending on the level). Each of these stations has a sign providing instructions regarding the next skill that is to be performed. Scoring is not as rigorous as formal obedience. The team of dog and handler move continuously with the dog under control at the handler's left side, however perfect "heel position" is not required. There should be a sense of teamwork between the dog and handler both during the numbered exercises and between the exercise signs. They perform the exercises indicated by a numbered sign at each station. After the judge's "Forward" order, the team is on its own to complete the entire sequence correctly. Unlimited communication from the handler to the dog is to be encouraged and not penalized. Unless otherwise specified, handlers are permitted to talk, praise, encourage, clap their hands, pat their legs, or use any verbal means of encouragement. Handlers may not touch their dog or make physical corrections. At anytime during the performance, loud or harsh commands or intimidating signals will be penalized. The Rally classes should provide a steppingstone for dogs and handlers from the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program to Obedience or Agility competition. In addition they will promote fun and enjoyment for advanced dogs.

Conformation judging is designed to offer a competition where dogs are judged against each other as to which dog most lives up to that individual breed's standard. This breed standard is a description, written by the National Breed Club, of what a breed should ideally be. This standard not only describes what the individual animal should look like, but also how they should move and act. It is written with the idea that each breed of dog was designed for a specific purpose and that every breed of dog should remain true to its original purpose.
